making rootbeer

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I have the rootbeer flavoring from Lehman's. If I understand the directions, - it's water, sugar, yeast, the flavoring and a few days ing the warm and then a couple weeks in the cool, dark.

Is it that simple. Any tips or don't do's from anyone who has had some successes or failures and knows what they did right or wrong.

Ok to make it in two liter pop bottles? or should I use these glass beer bottles and bottle capper. Any difference in the quality from glass or plastic?

I've made rootbeer, and my folks made it when I was a kid. Always used the Hires extract. It is simple to do. Be aware it won't be as sickly sweet as most bottles of rootbeer you buy.

As to using 2 liter plastic bottles, I can't say I've done it, I certainly wouldn't do it. I doubt that the plastic bottles could take the pressure. You'll probably lose a glass bottle or two as it is.

Actually, the hardest part of making rootbeer is waiting until it is ready. Good Luck! Gerbil

We just made rootbeer with our homeschooling co-op. We put it pint jars with regular two-piece canning lids. It was sooo good!

I have been making my own pop for several years all flavors.I always use plastic 2 ltr never yet had one explode.Do not use glass unless it's beer or pop bottles most glass bottles will not take the pressure.I also use champange yeast you don't get the yeasty taste in your pop...Good luck

I see champagne yeast mentioned here. Where could I find it?

Homestead2, try a homebrew source. There have been some given under the beer and wine making question. Gerbil

I've been making beer, wine and root beer, ginger ale, etc., for 20+ years. Never use a canning jar!! I like to use champagne bottles as most of them also take a regular bottle cap, but in recent years my son has been using plastic soda bottles, which work fine if clean (sanitized) as they can take much more pressure than glass bottles, even beer bottles. It is lots of fun.
