Title: Helicopter crash in B.C. leaves no survivors

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. (CP) - A two-seat helicopter crashed Wednesday morning at the local airport and ambulance officials say there were no survivors.

Intense heat from the resulting fire made it difficult to determine how many people were on board. A witness told Vancouver radio station CKWX the aircraft appeared to lose its tail rotor when it was hundreds of metres in the air.

Smoke from the burning debris was visible for kilometres around the airport.

Coast guard chopper crashes off Nfld.

WESLEYVILLE, Nfld. (CP) -- A coast guard helicopter with only a pilot aboard crashed Wednesday in Newfoundland's Bonavista Bay, about 15 kilometres from this tiny community.

The chopper was shuttling between a lighthouse and the shore when it was seen falling into the water, said Lt.-Cmdr. Glenn Chamberlain of the Halifax search and rescue centre.

There was no immediate word on the fate of the pilot or where the Bell 212 helicopter was based.

Debris was spotted in the water.

A Labrador search and rescue helicopter arrived at the scene in the early evening.

There were also about 40 small boats and six longliners searching the crash site southeast of Cabot Island, said Dan Sturg, a butcher who works in Brookfield, Nfld.

"There are a lot of small boats in the area," he said in a phone interview.

The weather was clear and cool with a light wind.

Sturg said he was told the coast guard helicopter was being used to bring supplies to the unmanned lightstation on the island, which had been closed for the winter.

There was no indication of when the lighthouse was to reopen.
