PSE&G Power Alert

NEWARK, N.J., May 8, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- This is an electric power alert from Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) (NYSE: PEG) and PJM, the electric power grid operator for the Mid-Atlantic region.

PSE&G and PJM are experiencing extremely high demand for electricity today (05/08/00) due to unseasonably warm weather which began over the weekend. If necessary, PJM may be required to initiate further emergency actions such as a system wide voltage reduction to preserve the integrity of the region's electric power grid. PSE&G and PJM are appealing to customers cut back on the amount of electricity that they are using to help prevent possible power supply problems.

Suggestions for conserving energy in hot weather: -- Set thermostats on air conditioners higher. -- Minimize opening refrigerators and freezers -- Limit the use of electrically heated water and turn off non-essential appliances and as many lights as possible. -- Postpone using major appliances that give off heat like electric stoves, dishwashers, and clothes dryers. -- Close curtains and blinds to keep out the sun and retain cooler air inside your homes. -- Check backup facilities for electric powered medical equipment and battery operated radios and flashlights, should they be needed. Following these guidelines to reduce the use of electricity will help avoid possible power shortages or emergency service interruptions today and tomorrow.
