Title: Power outage hits Clifton

May 8, 2000

A defective underground cable is believed responsible for a Clifton power outage in which 533 Consolidated Edison customers lost electricity late Sunday afternoon.

The blackout began at 4:42 p.m. and affected an area bounded by Greenfield and Tompkins avenues, Edgewater Plaza and Hylan Boulevard, according to Con Ed spokesman Mark Irving.

Power was restored at 5:27 p.m., when Con Ed switched customers to electrical service from a different feeder substation. Irving said the top priority was to restore power to consumers, after which Con Ed technicians could find and repair the problem in the Clifton substation system.

The utility received only four telephone calls from customers alerting them to the loss of power, according to Irving, who speculated that residents in the Clifton neighborhood may not have been home at the time, but outside enjoying some of the many activities taking place Sunday afternoon on the Island.
