Holidaymakers heading for the Channel Islands came down to earth with a bump when their aircraft's landing gear collapsed at Birmingham International Airport.

Jersey European flight JY569 to Jersey collapsed on its belly as it taxied towards the runway at the airport.

The undercarriage of the BAe 146 aircraft gave way after it hit a metal plate which was protecting maintenance work.

Luckily, all of the 120 passengers were wearing their seatbelts and none of them was hurt in the accident, which happened at 12.30pm on Saturday.

Fire crews arrived at the scene within a minute of the accident and airport support staff appeared a minute later. Fuel was removed from the plane to make it safe.

The passengers eventually took off for Jersey at 3.20pm after a replacement aircraft was brought to Birmingham from Stansted Airport.

More than 160 planes leave the airport every day and an airport spokeswoman said the accident was most unusual.
