Title: Pac Bell Hit By Glitches

Todd Wallack, Chronicle staff writer Monday, May 8, 2000 Pacific Bell's Internet service, which has been plagued by glitches in its e-mail system, had problems again this weekend.

The company's Web page warned users that e-mail was ``down'' or ``impaired'' all day Saturday, preventing some users from receiving their messages. Pac Bell reported it fixed the problem by yesterday morning, but it's at least the third time the company has had problems with its e-mail system in as many months. The company has more than 331,000 users.

``It's outrageous,'' fumed one San Francisco businessman, who had already scheduled two technicians to test his company's e-mail system over the weekend. He complained in an e-mail to the Chronicle that they couldn't complete the job because the Pac Bell mail system was down. ``I'm out hundreds of dollars in wages, and thousands more in lost opportunity costs.''

In addition, Pac Bell reported that users could have trouble posting messages to some portions of an Internet message board system known as Usenet. Pac Bell's Web site labeled the system as ``impaired'' both Saturday and yesterday. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2000/05/08/BU99151.DTL&type=business
