A Continental Express plane made an emergency landing at the Kalamazoo-Battle Creek International Airport Thursday morning after the crew reported smoke in the cabin. No one was hurt.

"The plane landed safely and taxied back to its regular space and our airport fire trucks followed them," said airport Director Kenneth Potts.

"When you get smoke in the cockpit, we look at the worst-case analysis because we want to be prepared for the worst."The EMB-120 returned to the airport around 9 a.m., about 10 minutes after it had departed the airport for Cleveland, Potts said.

There were four passengers, two pilots and a flight attendant on board the Brazilian-made turboprop, which carries up to 30 people.

"As we started getting up, it started getting more hazy. The stewardess didn't notice at first because she was sitting up front," passenger Karl Warner said. "It smelled electrical, so she called up front and got us turned around."

The problem set off a smoke alarm.

Potts did not know the cause of the problem, but said the plane was taken to a garage to be examined. As of this morning, the status of the plane or any repairs was unknown.

Continental Express runs flights to Cleveland five times daily, Potts said.
