Animal Protein in Molasses!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I was at the feed store that does custom mixing here and was told by the owner that the molasses they use in mixing contains animal by- product. I just thought that others might want to check their feed and know that this was going on. Also, I am having an impossible time finding black strap molasses here in E. Central TX, any help? I am 50 miles east of Austin...

Have you tried Walmart? One of the super ones that carry groceries. Ours has an organic black strap molasses

Our custom mix is milled with dried molassas, helps with fly control, yet giving the girls the benefits of having it in their diet. There is no animal by products in our feed except for the Headstart has whey, and since that is a by product of milk, I don't have a problem with it. I won't use fish and feather meal in my mix. We also have Corn, sunflower and another veg. oil, can't remember off the top of my head, instead of the by products oil that most goat feed has, including linseed oil! Ever wonder why sometimes the does seem to eat their feed readily and other bags they pick? It's because they switch the feed ingredients every time they make it! Going after a custom mix is a great idea. You don't have to have a lot of does to have this work for you! Vicki

You can probably get Organic molasses from Walnut Acres in PA. I buy my molasses in 5 gal. lots, and use it on poor quality hay for my cows, (cut 1:2 with water). this is real strong molasses and tastes more like soy sauce
