Title: Million-gallon sewage spill soaks wetlands

Mobile water and sewer officials were trying Thursday to manage about 1 million gallons of raw sewage that spilled from a manhole across a quarter acre of wetlands near Halls Mill Creek in west Mobile.

The spill, discovered Thursday morning after residents complained of foul odors, covered a wet thicket of woods north of U.S. 90 and west of Knollwood Drive with a layer of "black, gummy, smelly sludge," said Malcolm Steeves, director of the Mobile Area Water and Sewer Service.

The spill prompted an advisory from the Mobile County Health Department urging people to use caution when fishing or swimming in the section of the creek near U.S. 90. Any fish caught from the area should be thoroughly cooked before consumption, the health department warned, urging hand-washing after cleaning or handling fish taken from the creek.
