BY DONNA PAZDERA, sun-sentinel.com Web-posted: 1:40 p.m. May 5, 2000

About 100 students at a school for troubled teens were evacuated this afternoon after a gas leak was discovered.

The leak occurred around 1 p.m. at the Pine Ridge Center, 1251 SW 42 Ave. Workers were filling a 1000-gallon tank when a valve ruptured, said Todd LeDuc, spokesman for Broward Fire-Rescue.

Students were sent home, as they had about an hour left of classes for the day.

Firefighters are expected to take about two hours safely burning off the gas inside the tank and then capping the leak, LeDuc said.

It is not known what caused the valve to rupture.
