Title: Technical problems delay McDowell results

MARION - Malfunctioning vote-counting machines made for a long night Tuesday for McDowell County election workers.

"Our tabulators went on the fritz," said election supervisor Brenda Hemphill on Wednesday. "We had 12 go down. It was a madhouse."

Problems with the machines, which are only 5 years old, forced workers from five of the county's 17 precincts to bring their ballots into the election board's office in Marion for counting, which further delayed results Tuesday night.

But by Wednesday, it was clear that Republicans Andrew K. Webb and Larry "Butch" Hogan had advanced to November's general election, where they will face Democrats Chet Effler and Robert Boggs for the two seats coming open on the McDowell County Board of Commissioners.

According to unofficial returns, Webb received 765 votes while Hogan took 707. They were followed by Larry Seagle, who won 533 votes and David Walker, who earned 442.

Dean K. Chapman and Dean Hughes rounded out the GOP field.

In Haywood County, Democrats Austin C. Swanger and Bill D. Noland have advanced to November's general election where they will face Republicans L. Kevin Ensley and Carlyle Ferguson for the two seats coming open on the Haywood County Board of Commissioners.

Swanger, a former member of the Haywood school board, and Noland, a retired state employee, beat out five other Democrats to take the party's nominations. Ensley and Ferguson, who is an incumbent, beat out two other Republicans on Tuesday.

In the race for seats on Transylvania County Board of Commissioners, Republicans W. David Guice, Rob Davenport and incumbent Marla Cilley advanced to the fall election, where they will face incumbent Democrat Mike Hawkins and Democrat Charles H. "Pete" Peters for the three seats coming open on the board.

Madison County Republicans chose Donna W. Massey as their nominee to run against Democrat Jan Buckner for the county tax collector's position.

In non-partisan school board races, Craig Davidson Goforth defeated Marty Reese and Fred James Arpin to take the district 1 seat, while J.C. Wallin defeated incumbent Michael Bradley and Danny Dill to win the district 2 school board seat.
