JAKARTA, Indonesia (May 1, 2000 1:51 a.m. EDT http://www.nandotimes.com) - A head-on collision between two passenger trains southwest of the capital city of Jakarta killed at least five people, news reports said Monday.

The collision between a Jakarta-bound train and a train going from Jakarta to the West Java town of Merak occurred at the village of Mekar Sari, 20 miles southwest of Jakarta, said the private SCTV station.

Lt. Col. Pudji Hartanto, chief of the local police, who was interviewed by the station, said four people were killed instantly and more than 20 others were injured.

Meanwhile, Sonora, a private radio station, reported that at least one person died on way to the hospital.
