greenspun.com : LUSENET : Southern Railway : One Thread

Hello: I'm looking for info about the Georgia & Florida railroad it was merged into the SRR system in 1963. I am also interested in info re-lating to other shortlines that were merged into the SRR system such as LOP&G-GN-GAS&C-SG. I'm mainly interested in these railroads prior to their incorporation into the Southern. Thanks for assistance, Richard Stallworth

The Georgia & Florida was created in 1909 by the merging of several short lines. (Augusta & Florida; Atlantic & Gulf; Milen & Southwestern; Ocilla & Valdosta; Douglas Augusta & Gulf; Nashville & Sparks; Valdosta & Southern). It was put together by a group of investors headed by John Skelton Williams the Baltimore banker. Williams had recently lost control of the Seaboard when he formed the group. The Greenwood extension was built in the 1920's shortly before the line went into receivership. The Augusta Richmond libarary has some of the records on micro-film.
