Park could threaten airport

04/30/2000 By MICHAEL TOMBERLIN and CHARLES McCAULEY News staff writers

A push to designate East Lake Park as a city park would hamper the Birmingham International Airport's expansion plans and strengthen arguments for a new $2 billion regional airfield.

Birmingham City Councilman Bill Johnson, involved in the revival of the regional airport project, said he will ask the council to dedicate East Lake Park. That would put a kink in the Birmingham airport's master plan to handle growth.

Johnson said City Council approval of the dedication would trigger a public referendum. Johnson thinks the council votes are there.

Maya,

With all due respect, this is not very interesting. Why not post it to Diane J. Squire's new not-very-interesting environmental forum?

On the other hand, it is very concise. Its information density exceeds that of many threads' "tops." I was not sorry to have read it.

David,

Good point. There are too many copy 'n' paste posts that run on forever.

I guess I am just showing my provinciality. I don't have much feeling for Birmingham (Alabama or England)
