Sysops Aren't Really Systems Operators

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TB2K spinoff uncensored : One Thread

Sites like The New York Times On-line have system operators in charge of servers and software. They are sysops in a true sense.

But this bulletin board isn't a system. It's just a bb.

Shouldn't the person overseeing this board (any board) be termed a bbmonitor, or something like that?

Like a hall monitor in middle school?

I wonder what someone like Perplexed would be termed? Moron, maybe?

Actually, I think perplexed raised a fair question. What are the definitions of the two terms? I have seen them both used in reference to the person who has administration authority over the forum but I've also seen posts from people who get upset when a "moderator" is referred to as a "sysop". I don't know. Is there or is there not a difference?

Huge difference, people. A moderator mearly has control of ONE board here on lusenet. A 'sysop' (short for systems operator) has control over the lusenet SYSTEM.

The later CAN affect changes to software or hardware, the former CANNOT. They can only edit or delete posts to ONE BB.

Think of it as having a personal webpage. You have SOME control over what can or cannot be posted to it, you make changes and whatnot....but the ISP has ultimate control over wether or not you can even access the server.

Yes, thanks for clearing that up SuperPolly.

Super Polly is right. This is why I define myself as "forum administrator" in the About section of this forum. I do very little moderation, and because of this I chose not to use the term moderator. Administrator, sysop and moderator are terms that are used interchangably, but wrongly, by many posters.

-- Old TB2K Forum Regular (freespeech@yahoo.com), April 29, 2000.

"Sysop" was the preferred term used by the old TB2000 moderators because it made them feel more important.

you got that right, "its".

LOL!

btw, I can't spell to save my life.
