G3 PB, DVD playback & Rage Mobility chipset

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Mac Troubleshooting : One Thread

Why does my G3 Powerbook (400mhz) grind down to a halt when playijng a DVD movie, with delayed response to keystrokes/etc, when the ATI RAGE MOBILITY website ( http://www.ati.com/na/pages/technology/hardware/rage_mobility.html ) says that: "Software DVD playback is performed at full frame rates with very low CPU utilization, even on a Pentium II 266MHz system"

"The on-chip MPEG-2/DVD decoder with iDCT and motion compensation enables full frame rate DVD playback with very low CPU utilization"

Any ideas? Is this part of Apples DVD-copy protection, feeding the DVD signal directly to the display without MacOS having any say in the display signal feed?
