Title: Elevated Radioactive Reading Found at IAAAP

April 26, 2000

MIDDLETOWN - Results from a recent environmental sampling conducted by the United States Army Corps of Engineers at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant (IAAAP), have revealed an elevated level of radioactive readings at IAAAP. Subsequent analysis of the sample, however, did not show elevated levels of radioactivity.

A ground water sample obtained near the former Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) facilities at Line 1 at IAAAP indicated levels of radioactivity well above those considered safe for consumption under the Environmental Protection Agency EPA Safe Drinking Water Act.

The sample was taken as part of the Army's long term monitoring efforts at the plant. Subsequent analysis of the sample, however, did not show elevated levels of radioactivity.

No other ground water sample at Line 1 showed elevated levels of radioactivity, it appears to be confined to an area on site. There is no known exposure to the general public, as this ground water is not a source of drinking water.

At present the results of this data are inconclusive. Further testing and analysis is proceeding and required before a final determination can be made. The Army is planning to resample ground water at Line 1 in early May to determine whether elevated levels of radioactivity are actually present. This data should be available by the end of late June.

Additional investigations to evaluate potential environmental impact from AEC operations at the plant are currently being planned by the Army, Department of Energy, EPA, the Iowa Department of Public Health, and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
