PG&E crews have restored power to some 42,000 customers in San Francisco who had been in the dark since a few minutes after 7 a.m. today.

Spokesman Ron Low says the cause of the equipment failure at a substation is under investigation.

The outage affected parts of the Excelsior, St Francis Wood, Stonestown, Visitacion Valley, Lakeside, Diamond Heights, Twin Peaks and Sunset districts

A Municipal Railway dispatcher says cable cars that were affected on the California and Mason lines were back in service about 8 a.m.
