Well, without anybody else stepping up to the keyboard, I'll hazzard a guess...

If your picture was of a generaly dark background (or just far away), but there was a center area of very light color (bride in a white dress, etc.), Then a wide view (28mm) would see all that dark (or just distant) background with the light area just a small portion, and the flash would pump out a bunch more power to lighten it to. hopefully, become mid-toned. This would overexpose any forground or light colored objects. Conversely, a narrow view (105mm) would mostly see the light central area and this would force a reduction in the power of the flash to make it appear a middle shade (which would be under exposed for a light object). The 50mm view might see a ballance of the light & dark areas and then provide a more proper exposure.

This is all just a guess however, since we didn't get to see the pictures or even a discription of them. If you want more help show us an example or at least a detailed description of the subjects.

Your zoom range is too great for the Metz. It will work fine with a 35 to 70 mm zoom, but anything outside of that and you have to adjust the flash exposure settings.
