Title: Train Derails near Grand Canyon Caverns

Associated Press

PHOENIX -- A Burlington Northern & Santa Fe train derailed early Saturday near Grand Canyon Caverns, about 20 miles west of Seligman, authorities said.

No one was injured in the derailment, said Lt. Dave Snodgrass of the Yavapai County Sheriff's Department.

The train going from Houston to Barstow, Calif., derailed at 4:25 a.m., said Lena Kent, a spokeswoman for Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railways.

The derailment involved 10 cars -- six of which overturned or fell on their sides, said Seligman Fire District Chief John Kennedy. Of those six, two were leaking hazardous materials, he said.

One car was leaking ethanol and the other was leaking hydrocarbon solvent, Kent said.

The site was being treated by hazardous materials experts from the Department of Public Safety and Burlington Northern & Santa Fe, Kennedy said.

Daphne Haught, a rancher who lives near the site, said the derailment sounded like a bomb. The chemicals were pouring on the ground and evaporating into the air, she said.

Burlington Northern is investigating the cause of the derailment, Kent said.
