hood for 85mm f1.8

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

just got an used 85mm 1.8... on the canon chart, it says that i need an et-65iii hood. i've found an et-65ii. is this going to work? the et-65ii is a full hood (not a pedal shaped), and has two press-in notches. it fits fine. but don't know will it cause vignettes. thanks.

The hood ET-65II is the same as the ET-65III except that the ET-65III is a newer version (probably with some kind of flocking inside the hood to prevent reflections better, at least that is the case with the ES-71III hood for my EF 50/1.4USM lens). I haven't noticed any flare from reflections from the inside of the hood on my 100-300/4.5- 5.6USM with ET-65II though. The ET-65II/III hood is dedicated for the EF 85/1.8USM, EF 100/2USM and EF 100-300/4.5-5.6USM lenses.

I brought a EF100-300 USM in 1991 along with a ET-65II hood. About 5 years ago I got the 85 1.8 USM and have used the ET-65II hood with it and my 135 2.8 softfocus with no problems. My Canon lens chart is older so it lists the ET-65II as the correct hood for the 85 1.8 USM. The EW65 (for 35 2.0 & 50 1.8) will also fit albeit with less protection.

I have the ET-65III, bought for my 100-300, it has flocking on the inside. Other than that it probably functions the same as the version II model. I also use it with my version 1 50mm f/1.8 lens with no problems (other than being a little large, but it doesn't vignette).
