If this were in the states, there would probably be five dead. Updated 1:17 PM ET April 20, 2000
OTTAWA (Reuters) - A male pupil wielding a small kitchen knife stabbed four students and a secretary at a suburban Ottawa high school Thursday, a year to the day after the U.S. Columbine High School massacre.
Police arrested the 15-year-old assailant, who started stabbing the victims after a dispute started outside the school library. None of the injuries was life-threatening but all five wounded were taken to hospital.

Norm, you said,

"If this were in the states, there would probably be five dead."

Are you saying people in Ottawa are uncoordinated? If so please provide facts to back up your claims. Ottowans are not inferior to the rest of us, and on the whole could likely be just as successful at being assault-knife-wielding right-wing terrorists as their fellows South of the border.

Please refrain from insulting the poor motor skills and hand/eye coordination of Ottowans like this in the future.

BTW, if this had happened in a U.S. school, the first "victim" would have pulled out a .38 and dropped Zorro faster than a burning cat. THAT'S why it wouldn't have happened here.

Armed to the teeth and sitting on a heap o' beans,

You're right, Norm--this story is an argument for gun control. Frank, you're deliberately planting a red herring. The kid was armed with a knife instead of with a gun and thus was able to do less damage.

As for your mythical "hero," who pulls out a gun and stops the assailant before any damage can be done, in exactly what U.S. school has this happened?

Canadians,

Relax, I was just having fun. But it HAS happened where an armed principal has stopped a gun-toting student. I think the school board disciplined him for being armed at school!

On a serious note, I'd like to see all adults in the U.S. have the right to carry a concealed weapon (with the exception of felons/violent criminals who through their behavior have given up their rights IMO).

Frank,

I'm with you. I live in an area where any law-abiding citizen is allowed to carry a gun openly, and is eligible to obtain a permit to carry concealed. We have little crime here as a result. If someone starts shooting indiscriminately around here, they won't be doing it for long. Only in big cities and other places where the general public is effectively disarmed, does this sort of thing happen.

By the way, Prozac, Paxil, or Luvox? Or, in this case maybe Ritalin since the perpetrator is a kid?
