Great light in this pic. I love how you've isolated the bird. How did you meter this? Did you rely on the Minolta's autoexposure?

This was taken with Minolta's automatic matrix metering. A shot immediately after this (1/2 second later) shows more lighness and detail in the background, but this exposure is better.

Just good luck with the exposure. I barely had time to step out from behind my 600mm lens, grab the other camera slung over my shoulder, and take this picture as the bird flew by. The Venice Rookery was like a 10-ring circus, with so many great things going on: Great Blue Herons building nests, mating, and feeding chicks, Great Egrets in breeding plumage building nests, black-crowned night herons, anhingas...

Excellent work, Ross. Especially with a 600si. Love the reflection. Take a look at "www.photocritique.net". You can post some of your photos there as well (and see some of mine).

Thanks, Paul

Since you're the person who sold me your used Maxxum 80-200 AND 600mm lenses, it's great to hear a nice comment from you. Other than poorer AF, the 600si stands up pretty well as a backup for the Maxxum 9. The most important thing missing is, to me, inability to adjust exposure compensation using a thumb dial. I have that custom setting turned on for my 9.

That said, I sold the 600si and got another 9 with data back. I love having complete datas for every frame, and missed this for the shots I took using the 600si.
