Title: Pilot Killed in Crash of Banner Plane

by FRANCI RICHARDSON

BOSTON HERALD Tuesday, April 18, 2000

A pilot towing an advertising banner for the Boston Marathon died yesterday after he crashed a single-engine plane while trying to make an emergency landing at Norfolk Airport, police said.

The man, who was identified only to be in his 40s and a Cape Cod resident, was pronounced dead at 2 p.m. after being airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital, said Norfolk police Officer Janet Poirier.

Police received a call reporting the Piper's crash at 12:22 p.m. It was unclear why the pilot needed to make an emergency landing. Officials said he was the only one in the plane.

The accident scene was guarded by police until evening, when a team federal arrived to conduct an investigation, Poirier said.
