A further radioactive hot-spot has been uncovered on the foreshore immediately off the Dounreay nuclear plant.

The disclosure was made yesterday, a day after the plant's operators, the UK Atomic Energy Authority, received an award for environment management.

The metallic shard of fuel reprocessed at Dounreay in the 1960s or 1970s was recovered from the foreshore on April 5.

Dounreay spokeswoman Lynne Staples-Scott said: "The particle is still being analysed though initial investigations suggest it's similar in profile to the previous ones found on the foreshore."

The particles have been turning up at the rate of about one a month since monitoring started in 1984 with a further 10 having being unearthed on the public beach at Sandside. The UKAEA is trying to track the source of the pollution.
