Problems with VCD-creation on Mac

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I recently found out I could make my own VCDs so I tried it out. Went without a hitch except for the final output quality.

Here is my setup:

Sony PC10 miniDV Powermac G4 450 with built-in firewire ports Final Cut Pro 1.2 M.Pack 3.5.1 Toast 3.57 and 4.02

I use the built-in firewire to capture into Final Cut Pro then export it using Quicktime to a QT movie (none compression, millions color, best quality, size 352x288, sound 44.1KHz, 16bit, 2 channels). I work in PAL btw. Then M.Pack using MPEG-1PAL encoder. I set it to toast-ready and then use the standard settings it gives me.

Am I doing something wrong because the final output from M.Pack is full of artifacts and almost unwatchable? Everything before M.Pack is pretty good quality with no artifacts.

Thanks in advance for any help!

The problem is Astarte M.Pack. I've gotten terrible sound using M.Pack.... But I've had GREAT SUCCESS with Heuris's MPEG PowerProfessional 1 .... It is a $500 product that turns your QuickTime movie into a Toast-ready file that you can burn to make a VCD. You can get it at http://www.terran.com. Note that their $99 product called MPEG Export Engine does NOT allow you to make a VCD ... You need the MPEG Power Professional 1. (Also, you DON'T need their $1500 product called MPEG Power Professional 2).

Hi,

I thought that Heuris only made the MPEG compatible file, and not the disk image ready to burn on toast - or am I missising something???

The Heuris Power Professional does create toast compatible files, and it does give much better quality than astarte m.pack. There are alot more options to try using it, so expect to spend a little time getting used to them, but your vcds will look much better.
