Your first monsters will never be that great. You have raise a few and then combine them to create monsters that start off with better stats. Also try saving the game before combining, so you can keep trying things - there seem to be some random results.

Well, we are missing a lot of information here. What type of monster are you using? How old? The stats? etc.

So, let me generalize.

First, lets talk about monsters. I prefer heavy hitters, but when you are first getting into the game, they can be frustrating. I recommend a monster that is typically fast (or can be). Try a Tiger, Mocchi, Suezo, or Zuum. Tiger would be my preference. Get Power to 100+, Skill to 250+, and Speed to 250+. This should serve to get you into your first tourneys to win. Bring Skill and Speed up by 100 before bringing your monster up a Class (ie. C-Class Skill should be 450). Do this also to Power or Intelligence, your choice depending on the monster. What this will do is insure that your monster can hit and damage an opponent while avoiding damage itself. Modify this according to your need. Also note, this is only for beginners. As you get a handle on the game and the mechanics, do whatever the h**l you want. 8^)

Tactics. How do you fight a battle? Well, a sure way to frustration is letting the monster battle for itself. To be a better battler, take the monster and look at it's attacks. Pick out the ones with a high hit rating. Learn the controller, especially movement and the the triangle (for pushing off). Make sure you know how to switch techniques. When you control your monster in the battle, first thing you should do is get the techniques with the high hit percentages ready. To start the battle, stay away from your opponent for 5 to 10 seconds and build up the Guts level. Then, move in to the appropriate range and launch a couple of attacks. Try not to deplete your Guts. Charge close and push off from the opponent and then back away. Repeat until end of match. This method may not get you KOs, but with a speedy monster, you'll lay on a few good licks and stay out of the way of the bad one. Some other notes: learn which ranges are the dangerous ones for your opponent (ie. its better to stay toe to toe with pixies). Again, this is just a beginner guideline, with experience, do what you want.

Training. After one year of age, a lot of people do the 1 heavy, 2 regular and rest method. This does work well. Send your monster to some errantries when you have the GGGs and a sale. Make sure the errantry guy says there is some chance to learn a tech. If you learned one at that stat previously, make sure you use the tech in a couple of battles (several times) before attempting to get a new one at that errantry.

This should get you on your way to learning how to battle. Once you get the controller down and master your monster, it should go a lot easier. Just remember, doing well in battle means understanding your monster AND your opponent.
