Canada N.W.T.: Bankrupt gold mine fined for cyanide dumping

National Post

YELLOWKNIFE - A bankrupt gold mining firm was hit with a $1.4-million environmental fine yesterday. A judge levied the fine against Royal Oak Mines, which went broke in 1997, for dumping cyanide into a lake near its Colomac mine, north of Yellowknife, and later trying to hide the fact. Prosecutors acknowledged the fine may never be paid, but said the case sets a precedent that will deter other companies from flouting environmental laws.
