I tried using the Old Sheath for combining, and the game allowed its use...anyone know what it does when used that way?

It lowers the monster's stats.The sword or whatever you get from the durahan raises its stats at this is what I've heard.

You need it to get the double edged from the tourney.I just sold the one I got after I got the sword,you only get 50 gold though
