I just found Melissa Virus on my machine

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Grassroots Information Coordination Center (GICC) : One Thread

just found the Melissa Virus on my machine. I must have picked it up in the passed two days or so, because it only infected 10 of my 6,000 files. I run Norton Anti-virus and I THOUGHT my "auto protect" was ON but it was not. It was by sheer coincidence that I found the virus by copying a diskette for my husband who brought it to work this morning and called to tell me I had given him Melissa. (He can't say I don't share)

It appears Melissa showed up in a Word document. I know, I sometimes put something I'm going to post into Word to "spell check" it, so...it's possible that I passed this virus on. The good news is, I know it had "just" arrived and running the latest version of the Norton Anti-virus (from a free download at their site) killed it in short order.

One last thing, I was SURE my auto protect was ON, when I went back into my machine to put the Norton AntiVirus auto protect ON....my machine froze up. I've tried several times and it always freezes up. I have contacted Norton via email on this and I'll let you know if it is anything to be concerned about. I only mention this so that those of you that run Norton Antivirus will pay particular attention to whether your "auto-protect" is enabled or turned off.

Sorry for the hassle, these things happen; let's just nip it in the bud.
