For some time, I have been contemplating seeking employment with the IHS, most likely several years from now. New Mexico and Arizona interest me for "retirement", or at least, for my so called retirement years. I'm not much for towns, or even large groups of people, although I do get involved where I live and work. Any suggestions for locations to maybe take a look at on some future vacation? Any pros and cons re: the IHS? Many thanks in advance.

Polly, I am by no means well versed with Arizona except that we raft the Colorado through the Grand Canyon every couple of years and have friends that have the rafting company that we go with. They live in Page, which is an ok town next to the Navajo Nation and also not far from the Hopi. Lake Powell is right there, so lots of recreation besides the Grand Canyon. Also fairly close to Zion, and then Bryce, etc. National Parks up in Utah.

My grandparents used to live in Show Low in the White Mountains. That's close to Apache and I believe Zuni lands, as well. The mountains have pine forests and a more moderate temperature, and truth be told, I have also seriously thought about looking for Real Estate down there.

I am absolutely certain that someone else on this forum can give you better info, but I have to say that as someone from a northwest coastal climate, I can't get enough of Arizona. As far as IHS, I am woefully ignorant.

p.s.If you are non-Indian and want to blend in fast, it's real helpful if you are LDS (Mormon) as that's the predominant faith down there.
