Response to how long

Hi, I feed my baby goats 3 times a day for the 1st week. Then morning and night for the next 2 months. And when their eating good, hay etc. they get weaned.

Have you ever used a lambar? I put my kids on one as soon as they can stand and find an artificial nipple unaided. They grow up more like bottle babies than dam raised kids as far as disposition and it's easy to dispense meds in the milk. Like nursing mama, they can feed when they are hungry, a little at a time so you don't get pot bellies. The other up-sides are that the milk source doesn't walk away nor does it lie in dirt and dust that could carry worm eggs. It is important to keep enough milk available that all have an equal chance to feed and you have to keep the apparatus clean which is sometimes a challenge in warmer weather. I buy the nipples from what ever farm/goat supply is cheaper, get the tubing at the hardware store and cut it to length and use any clean plastic bucket available that held a food product. I'll be glad to give you more specifics if you wish. Just e-mail. Marilyn

this is probably a very stupid question, but here goes. do you milk the mother and then fill the bottles with her milk? or do you use a milk replacement? laura

Laura , if possible most people milk the goat and then bottle feed the kids , calves or sheep .This way they give more milk , some for the family and some for the babies. It also makes friendlier babies.

Patty, I am in contact right now with a guy who milks sheep in Canada, and wanted to know EXACTLY how to raise his sheep babies, like mine, so that they are so tame and personable! So you were right! Vicki
