Democrats Denton L. Schucker and Charles J. Miller went to bed Tuesday night not knowing which one will try to unseat entrenched Republican State Rep. Dennis E. Leh in November.

Computer problems at the Berks County Courthouse delayed the vote count in the 130th District, a once-rural section of the county inundated by suburban sprawl from Philadelphia.

"I've been watching the Flyers on TV," said Miller, 38, a self-employed carpenter from Amity Township. "None of the channels have broadcast results of the race."

Schucker, 51, former mayor of Fleetwood, was as much in the dark as his opponent for the Democratic nomination.

"I'm hopeful," he said late Tuesday night, "but I don't really know much."

Suburban sprawl, unleashed by the extention of Route 422 to King of Prussia several years ago, was the focus of the campaigns of both Democrats. The agricultural region of southeastern Berks region, which includes Boyertown, was not ready for massive development that sent taxes soaring and made classrooms crowded.

Leh, 54, who has represented the district for 14 years, is seeking his eighth term. He is a member of the House Transportation Committee, where he is chairman of the highway subcommittee.

The district also includes the townships of Amity, Colebrookdale, District, Douglass, Earl, Exeter (part), Hereford, Oley, Pike, Ruscombmanor, Union and Washington and the boroughs of Bally, Bechtelsville, Birdsboro and Fleetwood.
