Cause Of Odor On NJ Bound Jet Remains A Mystery

The cause of a "smoky odor" aboard a passenger jet that made an emergency landing Wednesday in Richmond could not be determined, and the plane was sent on its way, airline officials said yesterday. Delta Express Flight 2452 from Orlando, Fla., continued to Newark, N.J., Wednesday night after a thorough inspection and minor repairs, said Delta spokeswoman Cindi Kurczewski.

"We did not consider it an emergency," but rather a precautionary measure to land, she said. Kurczewski said she did not know the exact nature of the repairs.

The unplanned landing at 1 p.m. Wednesday was prompted by reports of suspicious smells aboard the Boeing 737-200.

About 90 passengers quickly got off and went into the airport terminal as firefighters arrived, but no fire was found, according to the Delta official.

The airline sent 26 passengers by bus to a Washington-area airport to continue their trip north. The rest made connections on other airlines.
