No Injuries on Either Flight

March 31  Two American Airlines jets were forced to make emergency landings tonight in Los Angeles within minutes of one another. Flight 1660 left from Long Beach Airport heading for Dallas after 4 p.m. The pilot reported smoke in the cockpit at about 4:49 p.m., it landed at Los Angeles International Airport minutes later. A total of 122 passengers and crew were on board; there are no reported injuries.

Officials at the airport say about 10 minutes after the MD-80 was forced to land, another American Airlines jet called in an emergency.

The 757 bound for Los Angeles from Miami notified the airport of flight control problems at 4:54 p.m., and about five minutes later the plane was on the ground.

All 149 passengers and crew are safe.

Earlier this month, a Delta Airlines flight bound from San Francisco to Salt Lake City made an emergency landing after experiencing landing gear problems.

Pilots were able to land flight 1972 without injuries to people on board.
