Subalpine tarn at dawn

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Nature Photography Image Critique : One Thread

An early october dawn in the W central Washington cascades at about 4600 feet. I think the reflection and the sky were about a half-stop apart; a half-stop ND grad might have improved things, but then again who carries a half-stop grad? The light was changing fast and this was pretty much a hasty composition. Velvia, Canon L 17-35mm zoom.

I usually don't bother to post when all I can say is "I like it", but I like it. Not much else to add.

Love the colors!

I like this one, however I think you can take it one step further. I would crop out the left 1/3 (begin at the tallest tree) and the very last tree on the right edge. By including only the parts of the image that are reflected in the water, you make for a more powerful graphic element.

The mood of this is: "I want to be there

Something you might want to try is to lower your camera as much as possible so that the water towards the bottom of the frame is reflecting lighted portions of the sky instead of the higher, darker areas. Inches from the water level would be great; the lower the better.

Still, very nice, although as a personal preference I don't particularly like the use made here of the trees as a framing device.
