I've no experience with Minolta I'm afraid, but I've used a Tokina 28~70 f/2.8 ATX lens for many years. It's one of the sharpest zooms I've come across. It's useable wide open at the shorter focal lengths, but contrast is a bit low at the long end. One other slight failing is that a small amount of geometrical distortion is evident at both ends of the range.

On the whole I've got great respect for the Tokina range of lenses. I also own a 100~300mm f/4 ATX, which is sharper than most of the fixed focal length 300mm lenses that I've tried.

I've been using Minolta for 8 years before I've changed towards Nikon. There's one thing I know for sure (according to the many tests I've read) about the Minolta G series - especially the 28-70 and the 80-200 - they are outstanding! They are mostly underestimated by Canon and Nikon users. Minolta G lenses are expensive but top of the line. I think they are worth the extra money if you're looking for a pro lens. In comparison the Minolta 28-70/2.8 is cheaper (at B&H) than the Canon/Nikon/Pentax equivalents.
