Risumis

Wednesday, March 29, 2000 Picture this:

A candidate for President was born into privilege, and grew up in a swanky DeeCee hotel adjacent to Embassy Row. He attended a posh private school; despite his indifferent grades he won admission to Harvard -- the only college to which he applied. There apparently was no need to select a fall-back school -- i.e., a middling university certain to accept him if his first choice said no. His college performance never equalled his potential.

Our protagonist attended law school, but didn't finish. To his credit, he enlisted in the armed forces. Yet although he served in Vietnam, he was neither a grunt nor a flyboy but an Army journalist. He married a charming woman whose name seemingly jumped straight from the reservations list for tennis times at the country club. He followed his father into politics.

The risumi sounds like a satirist's dream. It defines the caricature of what the chattering classes consider a spoiled Republican to be. And the brief bio belongs not to George W. Bush but to Albert Gore.

So what? If we swap Yale for Harvard and remove the part about going to Viet Nam (even in the capacity of an army journalist) we have the story of Dubyah. What's your point? The only decent candidate, John McCain, was sent packing by the republican voters.

Are rich slackers elected because they're rich and connected, or because it reflects on the americans' values and culture?

I second every word of abc's post.

What about Keyes? Isn't he still running? He'd be my choice!
