Hacker posts fake Gore remarks

MILWAUKEE, March 29 (UPI) - Marquette University officials want to know how a hacker invaded the school's computer system and posted false statements attributed to Vice President Al Gore on the web site's home page.

A fake main page claimed that Gore said he planned to "rid this country of anyone who might question my motives, starting with deporting all Christians" during his speech on campus Monday.

At the bottom of the page was: "Vote for me or die."

"Our IT (information technology) people are working through this figuring out what happened," John Hopkins, Marquette's vice president for communications told Wednesday's Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Hopkins said the fake home page was up for about 90 minutes early Tuesday morning.

"I don't think very many people saw it," he said.

The hacking incident occurred a day after information technology staff detected attempts to break into the university's computer network and took down the university's Internet link.

The Internet link was restored about 5 p.m. Monday and Hopkins said the hacker replaced the main page on the Web site about midnight.

Hopkins said the university had contacted the FBI about the attack and that technicians were auditing the system to determine whether the hacker tried to change students' grades or planted any computer viruses.

In October, a prankster hacked into George W. Bush's web site and posted a bright red hammer and sickle and a message urging a communist revolution.
