Do you believe in ghosts or evil spirits?

Would you be willing to spend a night alone in a remote house that is supposedly haunted? [questions from The Book of Questions, by Gregory Stock, Ph.D.]

If you do believe in ghosts, why? Do you have any good stories to share with the group? And if you don't believe in ghosts, why not?

I don't believe in ghosts, because I don't believe in souls. So, I don't think that a person's "essence" survives after death, and if that's the case, what could possibly haunt anyone? I'd be glad to re-examine my beliefs given some good evidence (or a fun spooky story, heh :). I'm also willing to consider the possibility that what people think of as ghosts might be some other kind of entities, rather than dead people who just can't let go of life.

if we refer a soul as a different mental state that is not dependent of material existance, than i would say i believe in souls, and therefore believe in the possibility of ghosts... i basically believe that we have mental states which subsist on a different level other than materialism, and there are truths besides material truths. i believe that this is closely related to the unconscious, or divided self - so in the end my definition of soul is not very orthodox or religious, more than it is spiritual and psychological.
