Mazda Recalls 2000 Model Year MPV Minivans

IRVINE, Calif. (Reuters) - Mazda Motor Corp. (7261.T) on Tuesday said it is recalling 30,000 2000 MPV minivans to fix a powertrain control module, and wants all owners of 2000 MPVs to bring the vans to dealers to reinforce front bumpers.

The MPVs that need reprogramming of the module were built between March 31, 1999 and Nov. 28, 1999. Mazda said some of the vans' modules have the wrong programming, which violates federal onboard diagnostic requirements.

Mazda also said tests by an independent agency found that front bumpers did not meet expectations for low-speed crashes, although they do comply with federal safety standards. Mazda spokesman Steve Gehring said the 34,000 minivans in question are safe but the bumpers will be replaced.

MPVs with redesigned front bumpers are scheduled to begin arriving at dealer showrooms by the end of April. The repairs are expected to take less than an hour, Mazda said.
