March 27, 2000, 8:45PM Students, teachers say fumes made them dizzy Houston Chronicle News Services More than 50 students and teachers at East Houston Elementary were taken to area hospitals to be checked Monday after complaining that fumes in the school made them dizzy and nauseous. Houston Fire Department hazardous materials crews tested air quality at the school in the 8100 block of East Houston Road but found no substances in the air to account for the symptoms. The first complaints were voiced by students about 9:30 a.m., said North Forest ISD spokeswoman Jackie Tolbert. Initially, six students and two teachers were transported, but as fire department personnel took those eight to LBJ Hospital, more students and teachers started complaining of the same symptoms. By 2 p.m., another 42 patients had been taken to Christus St. Joseph Hospital by bus and ambulance and another five had been taken to Parkway Hospital. Students whose parents wished to pick them up were dismissed early, and fire department crews checked the air inside the building again but found nothing. An investigation is continuing
