Title: Two Ships Collide Off Southwestern Sea of Sweden

Story Filed: Tuesday, March 28, 2000 10:03 AM EST

STOCKHOLM (March 28) XINHUA - Two cargo ships collided Tuesday off the coast of the Southwestern Sea of Sweden, with five people reported missing and one ship submerged.

A German container ship collided Tuesday morning with a smaller Danish-owned ship near the city of Kullen due to poor visibility, reports said.

The Danish-owned ship, flying a Liberian flag and carrying 600 tons of hydrochloric acid and 10 tons of its own fuel, sank quickly into the sea after the collision, said Swedish and Danish rescue officials.

Only slight damage was reported to the German ship, and its 13 crew members are safe, while seven Polish crew members aboard the Danish-owned ship have been rescued from the water, they said.

Investigations are underway to determine whether there was a leak of hydrochloric acid.

Sweden's environmentalists said the environmental pollution caused by the leak of hydrochloric acid could be more serious than that caused by the oil leak.
