Plane Crashes in Northeastern Spain, Causing Fire

Story Filed: Thursday, March 23, 2000 5:32 AM EST

MADRID (March 23) XINHUA - A military C-212 cargo plane crashed Wednesday night in Guadalajara, northeast of Spain, causing fire in the forest, according to the report by the Civil Guard of the country.

The fire have been put down but the whereabouts of the seven crew members on board are unknown with the rescue work going on, said the report.

The plane crashed three and half hours later after it took off at 4 a.m. local time from a southern military base to Saragossa in northeast Spain.

Officials from the Defense Ministry said that the reason for the crash is still unknown so far, but as the plane has been burnt out, the chance for the seven to survive is very rare.

This is the second air accident this month after two F-18 fighters crashed on March 13 near Saragossa, which killed one pilot.
