MUSCATINE, Iowa -- A 25-year-old Muscatine man died Monday afternoon after being hit by a train near a pedestrian crossing in the Riverside Park area.

The Muscatine Police Department had not released the name of the man, who was attempting to cross the tracks near the intersection of Chestnut Street and Mulberry Avenue.

Police said an officer who was patrolling the area saw the man attempt to cross at the pedestrian crossing as the train approached from the east. The man did not get to the crossing ahead of the train and ran into the side of the engine, striking his head.

The train, which was pulling more than 110 cars, was not able to stop until about 25 cars passed the point of impact.

The incident remains under investigation.
