MAS Y2K team is risk manager of the year

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia Airlines Y2K team has been awarded the "1999 Risk Manager of the Year Award" for their success in implementing risk management strategies to prevent and minimise problems related to the Y2K issue.

The team had formulated a comprehensive, structured and integrated risk mitigation programme to manage the millennium transition and maintain business continuity.

As a result, Malaysia Airlines' flights were airborne during the rollover from Dec 31, 1999 to Jan 1, 2000 and all reported no hiccups in the air or on the ground.

Meanwhile, Aris Murad from Sarawak Shell Bhd and the Telekom Malaysia Y2K network task force were commended for their efforts in addressing the Y2K problem within their organisations.

The award was presented by Energy, Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Leo Moggie on behalf of the Malaysian Association of Risk and Insurance Management at a dinner on Friday.

Malaysia Airlines Y2K team director Marzida Mohd Noor attributed the team's success to the support given by all parties within the organisation.

The team was set up in September 1997 with just two people and later grew to a total of 400 people comprising full time and part time personnel.

Malaysia Airlines had allocated RM104mil for this project and the team managed to cut down the cost between 10% and 15%.

"One of the tough challenges we faced was to create awareness among the staff on the enormity of the scope and its challenges, as initially everyone thought it was just an IT problem involving computers," she said.

During the period, the team had to check more than five million lines of program codes, over 1,000 suppliers and trading partners, over 3,000 front-end Information Technology (IT) devices and all 110 airline destinations and airports to ensure everything was Y2K compliant.--Bernama
