Fire breaks out in manholes in downtown Boston

By Associated Press, 3/18/2000 22:56

BOSTON (AP) Fire broke out in several manholes near St. James and Berkeley Streets in the city's Back Bay neighborhood on Saturday evening.

The fires started around 9 p.m. It was not immediately clear what sparked the blazes or how many manholes were involved. Fire officials said they believed at least nine were burned.

There were no reports of injuries.

Power in the area was intentionally shut off in the vicinity of Arlington and Clarendon streets, as a result of the fires, according to Mike Monahan of Boston Edison.

Police said no one was evacuated.
