When I was very young, somehow I got a strange notion into my brain. I thought that, at some point, I had crossed my feet at the ankles for a very long time and my feet had switched places. My left foot became my right and my right foot became my left. I didn't remember doing it, but I was convinced that it had happened. I don't think I told anyone about it, though. I think that belief has something to do with me having trouble telling my left from my right for many years. Even today I hesitate. If it weren't for the birthmark on my left (left? yeah, left) arm, who knows if I'd be able to differentiate the two.

Ya know, sometimes my feet still don't look right to me.

When I was little, I thought I was adopted. I just didn't belong with my family. I didn't like the same foods, and I certainly didn't look like them. (I do; I look like my Dad's mom, but I didn't know that then.) Even when confronted with evidence like a birth certificate, I didn't quite believe those were my real parents. I didn't want them to be my real parents, truthfully. Later, I toyed with the idea I was from another planet. Sometimes I still wait around for the mother ship to come back and get me.

I had the asinine belief that all grown folks were the marvels of sobriety, chastity, honesty and ethical behavior until my teen years. What a dope, because all the evidence was there for me to see. I easlily could see my faults but not those of others.

I know for awhile, I believed, hoped, that I was adopted and from Hawaii, I was sure my real parents would come and save me. As I got a little older I believed that something would NOT happen if I thought of it and had a plan. For example; we would not get into a car accident if I imagined it and played out the whole rescue scene.
