greenspun.com : LUSENET : Nature Photography Image Critique : One Thread

Hi,

I took these 2 images @ Yellowstone NP last yr around Sept. However, I never have the opportunity to have anyone criticize them. Any comments?

Equipment: Nikon F70QD

Lens : Nikon 70-300mm f4-5.6 ED Lens (AF)

Film : Kodak Royal Gold 100

Setting : Un-recorded

1st image is a Geyser.

2nd image is taken along the highway @ Yellowstone NP!

Thanks Eddy Lau

Hi, I'm a newcomer to this forum which I like very much, as much I can say so far. I'm from Austria, and I take pictures with my Pentax 67 in the Salzburg region and in the mountains of Austria an Germany. As I recently have got a scanner, I'm able to post pictures in the web. But I don't know how to post in this forum. I'd appreciate any help.

Now my comments: The first picture doesn't say anything to me, but the second is great, though it isn't that sharp as I would like it to be. Maybe just a scanning problem. Somehow it reminds me on landscape above the earthball seen from space... Franz

Eddy:

I don't understand the second image !
The perspective / angle of view of the reflected clouds does not match those in the sky ?
Is that the roof of a car ??

Franz:

To post images in this forum you need disk space on an internet server to be able to host your image file.
Most ISP's will let you use some space on their servers. Once you got that you will need to ftp your image file to the server/directory given to you. After you transferred the image file, check if you can bring up the image in your browser and than use that URL to post your image in this forum.

E.g. I've got an account with http://www.mandic.com.br, they reserved the http://pessoal.mandic.com.br/~janvnbdg directory for me (janvnbdg being my account there). I ftp'ed abertura.jpg to that directory. The URL of the image becomes: http://pessoal.mandic.com.br/~janvnbdg/abertura.jpg. Now I could post a question in this forum with the following img tag:

<img href="http://pessoal.mandic.com.br/~janvnbdg/abertura.jpg">
Hope this helped.

Guess laueddy@home.com isn't a real e-mail address. Quote:

Please don't use a fake email address; it creates a lot of technical problems for the community. For example, this software will send you an email alert if someone responds to your message and those alerts will bounce back to us if the address you type isn't valid.

Sorry, these photos are not up to the high standards of this site. Spend some time and look through the photos here and you'll see what I mean. I trust these are not the best two photos you took at Yellowstone as that would indicate a lack of imagination and photographic "eye". They convey nothing. That is as kind as I can put it.

These photos beg the question: Is it possible to develop a good "eye" for photography through hard work and study, or do you really have to be born with a gift for it? What I mean is, here was Mr. Lau, at one of the great natural wonderlands of North America and, well, above are the results. And I bet several of the photographers here could have even stood at the same place at the same time with the same equipment as Mr. Lau and taken excellent photographs.

The sad thing for me is that, presented with the same opportunity, these might have been my best shots. I used to be quite interested in photography, even going so far as to maintaining my own darkroom in a dank corner of the basement long ago. I got discouraged at the results - not so much technically as artistically. Like a lot of people, I think I know a great photograph when I see it (and I'm stunned by some of the work I see here) but I could never seem to rise above amateurish snapshots myself.

I mean no offense, Mr. Lau. Maybe we could both benefit from the insight into this question by the very talented photographers here. I stumbled onto this site by mistake a few weeks back and have been fascinated by the work I'm seeing. And this question has been on my mind for some time, as I have been considering whether or not to rekindle my interest in photography. I know I've sidetracked the discussion here, and this "critique" might be considered rude, but I would appreciate some response. Or, if you wish, you can tell me where to go.

Thanks.

Sorry, my e-mail address is laue@home.com, my other one is laueddy@hotmail.com, I typed it wrong. BTW, the 2nd image is the reflection of my car roof. To listen to negative feedback is exactly what I wanna hear, cuz I have only started to take pics, since Sept 98. I spend lots of time doing reading and shooting pics, however, I hardly have the chance to have anyone tell me the bads about my pics! Anyway, may everyone of us keep improving our skills, etc in photography, and I would try post you some more interesting photos in the future!
