Bus Owners On Strike Over Fuel Price Hike

March 16, 2000

BUJUMBURA, Burundi (PANA) - Private bus owners in Burundi embarked on a two-day strike Thursday to protest a steep rise in fuel prices.

Following the strike, workers in Bujumbura had problems in reaching their workplaces as only a few buses from the state-owned Public Transport Company were available.

The president of the Association of Burundi Transporters' Association, David Niyungeko, said they had decided to go on strike instead of unilaterally raising fares.
